UMA UNIVERSIDADE MODELO PARA O BRASIL: a Educação Superior e o projeto de construção da nacionalidade brasileira (1935-1945)

Abstract

Five centuries of history were necessary that Brazil could create an university as an institution. Only in the twentieth century and in the context of political modernization, the discussions for the creation of universities took shape. This process led the Federal Government to establish in 1920 its first university, the University of Rio de Janeiro (URJ). However, this university was far from being characterized as a modern university. During the authoritarian New State, to adequate the institution to the national development model, the URJ was transformed in 1937 into the University of Brazil (UB). Step through the complex creation process of the university institution in Brazil, as well as its consolidation, is to undertake a journey through Brazil's history in pursuit of its modernization, also dipping into various networks of our social memory.
