MÃES EDUCADORAS E PROFISSIONAIS: educação feminina em Teresina na primeira metade do Século XX

Abstract

This paper presents an overview analysis about the formal education of women, in Teresina, in the first half of the twentieth century. It also deals with the presentments of women's education in dispute in the social hierarchy. It works with a corpus of documents consisting of memoirs, articles published in newspapers and census data. It concludes that although women, in the period studied, have been the subject of a formal education that headed toward the traditional female roles, not all subjectifying incorporating the dominant’s presentments of gender. This is because, paradoxically, female education reproduces hierarchies and inequalities of gender and also helped them to be problematized.
