Abstract: The theme of this article is related to the sugarcane culture and economy in the Cariri region of Ceará. More specifically, to the technological changes observed by water powered wooden mills or animal traction still in the 1930s, the later modernization with the manufacture from steam powered iron mills - such as the one promoted by local manufacturer, Antonio Linard - until the arrival of the Manoel Costa Filho Mill in the region, in the mid-1970s, where our research stops.

Keywords: Cariri Ceará. Industrial heritage. Sugar mills.
