Abstract: The objective of this research is to analyze the reasons that led to the closure of BAPE, a traditional amateur soccer tournament that was differentiated by the fact that it opposed teams from the cities Juazeiro (Bahia) and Petrolina (Pernambuco). BAPE was carried out between the 1970s and the 1990s. The documentary analysis of journalistic articles reflected a football tradition ritualized by identity ties and feelings of neighborhood and rivalry between cities. With the presence of internal disorders, as well as physical and symbolic violence, the tournament loses space in the sports agenda. Its protagonists experienced its decline, associated with other problems and the growing professionalization of football, extinguishing an event of great relevance in the history of the Saint Franciscan football.
