Abstract: During the 19th century, in the province of Ceará, located in the current Northeast region of Brazil, good part of the poor and colored population, free or enslaved, was classified by rulers and other members of white minorities as "people of the worst kind", prone to crime due to their racial origin and the space in which they lived. Such speeches ended up building the image of the backlands as a lawless land and its people of the Ceará province as individuals who knew only violence as a means of survival. In this way, the objective of this article is to analyze the social relations established in the backlands of Ceará during the 19th century, as well as to understand how relationships between free men and slaves we built amid conflicting associations, but were also marked by solidarity and affection.
Keywords: Backlands of Ceará. Slavery and freedom. Violence and criminality.
