Abstract: The present work seeks to problematize the representations on masculinity in the city of Caxias, Maranhão, in light of the press in the context of the First Republic. In the meantime, the newspapers divulged, through news about violence, fashion, drug advertisements and alcoholism, the various male performances circulating in Caxias. Male representations were thus constructed, understood and classified between ideal and disorder in view of their practices. To discuss these issues, I worked with categories such as gender and affluent masculinities versus masculinities of the popular segments so as to understand, through the press, the composition of representations of the behaviors of men who were exalted and those that should be restrained in the midst of social relationships marked by class and color.
Keywords: Masculinity. Press. City. Representation.
