PARANÁ MEDICINE AT THE DAWN OF THE 20TH CENTURY: an analysis of the discussions broadcast in Gazeta Médica do Paraná (1901-1904)

Abstract

In this text, we analyze the discussions carried out in the first Paraná medical journal, Gazeta Médica do Paraná, in its short duration, between 1901 and 1904. The objective of the work is to understand how Paraná doctors linked to the journal interpreted the science and medicine of the period, considering the specificity of the role they played in the production of Brazilian medical-scientific knowledge, while understanding the journal as an important tool for the defense of their socio-professional interests. There is a discussion on the specificity of medicine and science from a regional perspective, reflecting on the center-periphery debate, seeking to demonstrate how medicine practiced far from large centers appropriated or not what was circulating, not always remaining alien to this knowledge, neither fully incorporating it.
