Abstract

This article intends to discuss, in a specific context - the city of São Luís, between the 1960s and 1970s -, the relations between capoeira and Afro-maranhense cults, extending the analysis to the imaginary of the São Luís society at that time. To this end, we start with the pioneering work of the ludovicense capoeira practitioner Roberval Serejo – named as one of the responsible for the reappearance of capoeira in São Luís in the second half of the 20th century –, his relationship with the Afro-maranhense cult and the mysterious cases of fatal accidents that occurred during the construction of the Port of Itaqui (São Luís, Maranhão) in the 1970s.
