Abstract

Abstract: In the last decades of the 19th century, the Scramble for Africa was atheme of the weekly magazines  and  newspapers  of  the  illustrated  press inLondon,  Paris  and  Berlin. But it  was  in  Lisbon that  caricaturists most represented  Africa  through  femalestereotypes,especiallyas  the  object  of  the desire of foreign aspirants. Among other aspects, I try to demonstrate how this Portugueseversion of the Scramble  for  Africamirrored  the  castration  spectrum  of  a  generation  of  intellectuals  and  artists whose patriotism was beenwell suited to colonialism.
