Abstract

Christmas was the main festival calendar Aracaju.  The celebrations took place over thirty days,involving novenário preparing the feast of the patron saint, Our Lady of Conception, until the feast of the HolyKings, with the procession of St. Benedict. These celebrations are the central focus of this article, which aims todiscuss the construction of representations of tradition and modernity measured to such ceremonies in the city ofAracaju. Accordingly,  by recording of memoirs and photographs, it became possible to understand the sociallegitimacy of the new capital of Sergipe through its festivities.
