A PRODUÇÃO DE CONHECIMENTO EM ARQUEOLOGIA: hipóteses sobre o povoamento pré-colonial na Ilha de São Luís a partir das campanhas arqueológicas de Mário Ferreira Simões.

Abstract

This paper discusses the knowledge production on the archeology field, focusing as a case study the archeological campaigns of the researcher Mário Ferreira Simões at São Luís Island, in 1971. First, it was made a bibliographic review about the theme and the transcription of all the documents that belonged to this researcher – letters, field notebooks, reports, appointments etc – deposited at Ghilherme de La Peña archive, in Emilio Goeldi Museum, Belém, Pará. Then, it’s presented the main hypotheses and interpretations about the pre-colonial populating at São Luís Island, with a critical analyze of its results by the correlation with the present archeological production and showing the new problems of the future works, starting from the archeological research at Bacanga shellmound.
