“Universal and navigable description of the entire terrestrial globe”: French Antarctica in Franco-Portuguese nautical cartography

The dispute for control of the seas played a crucial role in the expansionist scenario of Europe during the 16th century. In this context, the concept of Mare Clausum was widely used by the Iberian monarchies to justify their sovereignty over the Atlantic. The complexity of this period can be analyzed through the production of nautical maps created by French and Portuguese cartographers, with particular emphasis on the planisphere Universa ac navigabilis... by André Homem. Through this map, the apparent “stability” of Iberian hegemony in the Atlantic was marked by constant French challenges along the Brazilian coast.
