About the Journal

Our mission

Disseminate research in the area of History, foster academic discussions between Brazilian and foreign professors, students and researchers, and enable public access from similar areas to the knowledge produced by researchers linked to the national graduate system.

Focus and Escope

Since its creation, Outros Tempos has constituted itself as a space of a transdisciplinary nature, bringing together the dissemination of results from historical research, sociological and anthropological texts and from other areas of the Human and Social Sciences. In each edition, it publishes free theme academic articles, thematic dossiers, reviews, case studies and interviews.

Anti-plagiarism Policy

At first, Outros Tempos recommends that authors read the Good Practices Guide for strengthening ethics in scientific publishing (SciELO).

Next, and in order to guarantee an editorial policy committed to ethical publication criteria, which encourage the identification of plagiarism, bad practices, fraud, possible ethical violations and the opening of processes, we strongly recommend that authors take the following steps before submitting texts for the journal:

  • Explicitly reference data acquired, analyzed or interpreted from other publications;
  • Quote any intellectual content from other authors;
  • Indicate as authors only those who actively and substantially participated in all phases of the research and writing of the article;
  • Do not omit any researcher completely involved in the research and writing of the article from the list of authors;
  • Include all authors in the article authorship criteria.

After submission, the manuscript will undergo the Plagius Professional software. The Editor-in-Chief, together with the Journal's Secretariat, may carry out the following procedures, when deemed relevant::

  • Request formal explanations about the participation of authors who subscribe to the text;
  • Request formal explanations about any doubts, problems and/or points of doubt arising from the similarity assessment of the manuscript.

As soon as the results and any explanations are received, it will be up to the Editor-in-Chief, together with the Editorial Board, to decide on the proceedings in relation to the manuscript.

Peer Review Process

Manuscripts submitted for evaluation that are in accordance with the editorial rules undergo a first evaluation by the Editor-in-Chief, who verifies the adequacy of contributions to the thematic scope of the journal. Once approved in the pre-selection, the contributions are forwarded to the reviewers.

All articles are evaluated by at least two reviewers, who may be members of the Advisory Board or ad hoc advisors. When issuing the opinion, they take into account the quality of the treatment of the topic, the clarity of the writing and the compliance with the journal's editorial rules. Reviewers can refuse, suggest changes or approve the publication of the text. In the case of divergent opinions, the contribution is necessarily sent to a third reviewer.

The entire process of sending and evaluating texts is carried out through the Open Journal System (OJS), which hides the names of evaluators and authors of contributions, in order to preserve the double-blind evaluation. The opinions are confidential and, when agreeing to issue the opinion, the evaluator must certify that there is no conflict of interest in relation to the text to be evaluated.

The opinions serve as a basis for the editorial decision, and the Editorial Board reserves the right to publish or reject the sent submission. After the opinions are issued, via the journal's specific form in the OJS, the authors are informed of the editorial decision, which can be of five types:

  1. a) Accept
  2. b) Mandatory corrections
  3. c) Submit again for evaluation
  4. d) Submit to another journal
  5. e) Reject

In the case of requesting minor changes, the authors have a deadline of 15 days, as of the sending of the editorial decision, to carry out the requested changes. The new version of the text must be written using the Control Change feature of Word or similar software and the author must send a Letter to the Editor in a separate file explaining how the requested changes were made and, in case of not doing those, the justification for adopting this procedure. After sending the new version corrected by the authors, the editor responsible for conducting the assessment verifies the requested changes and decides whether the article will be rejected or approved. After approval of the manuscript, it proceeds to standardization, review and layout adjustments.

Finally, we must inform that the evaluation process takes on average two to four months.

Originally launched as an annual journal, in 2008 it changed its periodicity to biannual, at which time it also instituted the publication of thematic dossiers. Before that, in 2007, a special volume was released with the theme History and Politics. Currently, all publications have a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), adopted since 2015.

In the last two Qualis/Capes assessments, 2010-2012 and 2013-2016, it was classified in stratum B2 in the area of History and Interdisciplinary. Since then, it has been improving internal rules and procedures, with the aim at reaching the highest evaluation strata.

In 2021, as part of efforts to give more visibility to its publications, it created the Outros Tempos Journal Program, a partnership between the journal and ANPUH – Maranhão Section for the production of bimonthly video episodes with dossier organizers and guest authors. The Program is broadcast on the ANPUH Maranhão YouTube Channel.

Published exclusively online since its inception, Outros Tempos is the longest-running and most important publication in the field of History in the state of Maranhão.
